A dynamic course designed to give you everything you need to know about working creatively with steel. Through presentations and gallery visits you will discover the art historical and contemporary context of metal sculpture, whilst learning from a practical perspective how to fabricate with steel using MIG welding, folding, rolling, drilling, cutting, Plasma cutting, grinding, surface finishing techniques and an opportunity to TIG weld stainless steel at the end of the course. The course will give you the confidence to work independently with these processes with an emphasis on safe practices in the workshop.

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
This course is suitable for all levels. Students can move at their own pace depending on their experience, with as much support from the Tutor as they wish. This means an student from the following experience levels can join this course:
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience.
Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium.
Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.
Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.All Levels

YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN MATERIALS
You must have leather boots (preferably steel toe caps) and flame retardant overalls (£25-£40 online) to attend the course.
Gas, consumables (disks etc) and scrap material will be available for free and a small amount of steel for the letter project will be provided for a materials fee of £20.00 payable on or before the first session. Additional materials will be charged by the metre. Estimated additional costs will be £10-30 depending on which material you use and scale.
Julian Wild joined the Art Academy in 2016 and has 20 years teaching experience at Morley College and as a visiting lecturer at University level. He has held solo shows at Modern Art Oxford, William Benington Gallery, Maddox Arts, Canary Wharf and Burghley House and taken part in group exhibitions such as Sculpture in The City and in Beyond Limits at Chatsworth House. His work has been commissioned by Cass Sculpture Foundation, Canary Wharf Group & Oxford University. In 2005 he was a finalist for The Jerwood Sculpture Prize and in 2009-12 was the recipient of The RBKC/Chelsea Arts Club Trust Studio Bursary. He was vice-President of The Royal Society of Sculptors 2015-19.
