This course will give students a solid overview of the many possibilities of Photoshop and explore the exciting world of digital drawing. Each class will be exploring a different type of illustration, including:

  • Portraiture
  • Character design
  • Environment design
  • Editing photographs

Starting with images of everyday objects, students will first practice digital drawing and get acquainted with the different tools in Photoshop, such as the brush tools, paint bucket, and text tools, to create illustrations.
Throughout the course you will be using a variety of references to inspire you to develop your own visual language. Delving into character illustration, you will look at the different ways animals and creatures are represented in popular culture: from realistic drawings to cute talking creatures in Disney films. You will also be taught about principles of illustration and drawing that can apply to all media.

The aim of this course is to acquire a comprehensive set of digital skills through a series of creative exercises and briefs.

While beginners are welcome to the course, a basic level of computer literacy is required.
After completing this course we recommend signing up for our Design a Children’s Picture Book course.

Beginner

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

All materials will be provided for this course, please bring a USB to save your work onto.
