This course will give students a solid overview of the many possibilities of Photoshop and explore the exciting world of digital drawing. Each class will be exploring a different type of illustration, including:
Starting with images of everyday objects, students will first practice digital drawing and get acquainted with the different tools in Photoshop, such as the brush tools, paint bucket, and text tools, to create illustrations.
Throughout the course you will be using a variety of references to inspire you to develop your own visual language. Delving into character illustration, you will look at the different ways animals and creatures are represented in popular culture: from realistic drawings to cute talking creatures in Disney films. You will also be taught about principles of illustration and drawing that can apply to all media.
The aim of this course is to acquire a comprehensive set of digital skills through a series of creative exercises and briefs.
While beginners are welcome to the course, a basic level of computer literacy is required.
After completing this course we recommend signing up for our Design a Children’s Picture Book course.

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.Beginner

Laura Nasir-Tamara is a London-based animator and illustrator, with a keen interest in blending traditional and digital drawing techniques.
She trained at Ecole Emile Cohl in France in drawing, painting and animation. She graduated with an MA in Animation from the Royal College of Art and has worked on short films, documentaries, advertisements and music videos screened internationally for clients including Channel 4 Random Acts, BBC Documentary, LADBible, Crosswalk Records. In her personal work, she likes to blend digital animation with traditional painting, exploring stories of human relationships.

Bankside Campus
Students are welcome to use The Hub during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food. You must bring your own keep-cup, water bottle or food container to the Academy as mugs, glasses, and containers will not be available in our Bankside campus.
Tea and coffee will be provided by the Academy and is available from the island unit at the end of The Hub.
