Students will have the opportunity to work from a portrait model who will sit for the majority of the lessons.

Throughout the course, students will explore the following topics to help them further understand portraiture:

  • Measurement and Proportion
  • Tones and colour
  • The anatomy of a skull
  • Self Portraits, using a photograph and mirror
  • Expressive drawing
  • How to convey narrative and emotion
  • Mark-making
  • Composition

Your tutor, Zoe Toolan, will create a vibrant and supportive studio environment and will encourage you to explore and push yourself through both the discipline and subject. This course is a must for anyone interested in improving their portrait understanding, furthering their interest in drawing through the focus of portraiture, and those wanting to progress to create portraits in other disciplines, such as painting. We recommend completing a beginners drawing course or having basic drawing skills before signing up for this course.

Beginner

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

You will need to bring your own drawing materials to the class, which you can store at The Art Academy for the duration of the course. If you do not have your own materials, we recommend you order the Pack, below, at the time of booking, which will be available when you arrive for your first class. There is also a mini shop in the Academy that supplies the basics such as pencils, sketchbooks, putty rubbers etc. (card purchases only).
