Explore a more painterly side of etching in this weekend Experimental Techniques course. Students will develop images on zinc plates by playing with the ‘accidental’ in the intaglio process, exploring unusual mark-making techniques such as splashing, dripping and smudging to produce fascinating and unique prints.

On the first day the class will go through an introduction to the materials including a series of technical demonstrations. You will be introduced to a variety of etching and printing techniques including painterly spit-bite aquatint.

Throughout the course you will learn how to:

  • Use a variety of specialist printmaking equipment and materials
  • Apply this knowledge to create painterly and experimental effects
  • Prepare a zinc plate: filing, polishing, degreasing
  • Apply aquatint and sugarlift solutions to add tone to the plate
  • Ink up and proof the etched image
  • Use a professional printing press

This popular course is flexible, allowing you to work at your own speed – and if you’ve attended this course before, you can work on your own individual etching projects. The course fee covers materials including two polished zinc etching plates.

The studio is a low-toxic environment with dedicated printmaking facilities for professional hands-on learning. Once you have completed the course we recommend signing up for one of our other etching courses, or join us for Open Access sessions on Wednesday evening and Saturdays during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills. After completing this course students will be given one free Open Access session.
