This exciting new course will radically expand students’ understanding of and approach to painting. Expanded painting moves out beyond the easel and the physical limitations of the image to investigate how far painting can go in spatial and temporal dimensions. This course encompasses a myriad of different ways to challenge and extend what painting can be, including deconstructing the canvas, site specific and responsive painting, sculptural techniques and construction, time-based projection, and combining painting with objects to create installations. You will be explore relationships between the image and the object, between two and three dimensions, and between the real and the imaginary, developing a large final project that relates to your individual concerns and subject matter.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Analyse the work of others and apply findings to their own work
  • Create experimental paintings using different media, surfaces and 3D construction techniques.
  • Create site specific paintings that utilise projections and found objects.
  • Research, plan and realise a self-initiated project.

This course is suitable for all levels. You should be open to new ideas and to questioning and challenging perceptions. You will need to source your own subject matter and generate ideas to explore.

Alison Hand is BA Fine Art Programme Leader at Art Academy London. Her painting practice creates chaotic imaginary environments and explores the relationship between the illusory and the object. She has also created site-specific painting installations in derelict spaces. She has an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art and is currently Artist in Residence for the Kings College London Dreams and Wakeful Consciousness Project. She is a writer and curator, currently working on an extended essay on drawing for Bloomsbury Publishers. She exhibits around the UK and her work has won numerous awards including the Basil H Alkazzi Scholarship; the Gordon Luton Award; and the Stephenson Harwood Award. @alisonhandartist
