This fun and engaging week of portrait painting and figure painting is open to all levels. Less experienced students will enjoy an introduction to portraiture and figure painting while more advanced students benefit from a refresher in figure work aiming to progress their practice. The course will cover planning a painting and executing two types of portrait: head and shoulders and a full figure composition.
Throughout the week students will focus on:
Your experienced tutor will support you throughout the course in both group sessions and one-to-one support providing daily feedback, critique and constructive advice. The course ends in a final round up session and should you wish for any specific feedback or support, please speak with your tutor at the start of your course. By the end of this course students will have 3-4 completed paintings, including head and shoulders portrait and compositional full figure portrait within the studio.

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
This course is suitable for all levels. Students can move at their own pace depending on their experience, with as much support from the Tutor as they wish. This means an student from the following experience levels can join this course:
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience.
Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium.
Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.
Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.All Levels

If you do not have your own materials, we recommend you order one of our Painting Packs when booking. You can purchase this at the checkout. Once ordered, packs will be available when you arrive for your first class. There is also a mini shop in the Academy that supplies the basics such as canvas boards, paints, Zest-it etc. (card purchases only)
The Academy is a white spirit and turpentine free environment and only odourless spirits, such as Zest-it or Sansodor, are permitted on the premises. These can also be recycled on site. If you are using oil paints you must bring 1 small jar with a lid to hold your solvent as this should be reused each week. If you want to dispose of your solvent please speak to your tutor as these cannot be poured down the sink and must be disposed of correctly.
Please also bring an apron or old clothing to wear.

Charlie Pickard is a classically trained fine artist, illustrator and author. Trained at the London Atelier of Representational Art, completing his training in 2017. His work has been seen at the Royal Society of Oil painters in 2017 and the Royal Society of British Artists in 2020, where he was awarded the Philip Delazlo Award for excellence. Charlie also regularly contributes articles to various publications including Artists and Illustrators, Imaginfx and 3Dtotal. He Illustrated the book ‘Anatomy for Artists’ in 2020 and Authored the book ‘Colour and Light’ in 2021, both in partnership with the publisher of 3Dtotal. Charlie continues to work, write, exhibit and teach out of his studio in London.

Bankside Campus
Students are welcome to use The Hub during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food. You must bring your own keep-cup, water bottle or food container to the Academy as mugs, glasses, and containers will not be available in our Bankside campus.
Tea and coffee will be provided by the Academy and is available from the island unit at the end of The Hub.
