Have you ever wondered how Rodin, Giacometti, Picasso, Degas made their work?This one-week course offers the opportunity to delve into the extraordinary and intriguing subject of the human figure in sculpture. Offering an opportunity to work in clay to make sketches and more established works from a life model, learning techniques to begin your journey into sculpture.
You will be sculpting the human body, developing techniques of mapping the structure through key points of the skeleton, understanding the anatomy of the body and representing it in clay. How do we sit, where is the weight, how do we twist and turn? Through observation of a variety of poses you will learn how to capture the human form, how to interpret a pose and how to create expression and drama. This intensive week will provide useful practical and theoretical information, examining rich and diverse cultural artistic references.
Your final sculpture will measure roughly 30-45cms and will be made from clay and available to fire at extra cost.

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.Beginner

£15 for a small figure; £20 for a portrait head; £20 for a large figure
Firing Fees:
During the second half of the course there will be an additional charge for metal wire. The cost will depend on the amount of wire used.
Anthony Waters has a diploma in sculpture from Heatherley’s College and in 2016 graduated from the Art Academy Certificate programme. Previous to this he worked as a graphic designer and seeks to make work which crosses the boundaries between 2D & 3D, figurative and abstract, exploring materiality and the processes involved in producing sculptural work. He won the prize for best non-member newcomer for the FACE exhibition, Society of Portrait Sculptors in 2016 and was a joint winner of the Surrey Sculpture prize the same year. expression. By placing familiar objects in an unfamiliar form or space she overwhelms the viewer with a sense of entrapment or unease.
