This is the perfect introductory course to Portrait Painting, for those with some painting experience. This detailed course will teach students how to accurately paint a portrait, and the different techniques involved.

The emphasis will be on learning to see form and colour accurately, using a portrait model, and applying these skills to better create loose and expressive portraits.

The course will cover:

  • Proportion and the structure of the head
  • Tonal studies in monochrome
  • Introduction to using colour
  • Applying paint using a palette knife
  • Contrasting and bright backgrounds

Starting with drawing, students will be taught to proportion and structure the head. Following on, you will be working with oil paints and develop a series of artworks from short expressive painting sketches, to longer more detailed pieces. As the weeks progress you will also have the option to paint more of the figure if preferred. The class has the benefit of an experienced model every week as well as tuition from a talented professional artist.
