TIMES: 10:00am – 5:00pm

Japanese Woodcut or Mokuhanga is a relief printmaking process that is completely non-toxic in that it uses watercolour pigments and nori (rice starch) instead of oil-based ink. The prints are handprinted using a baren – a disc-shaped printmaking tool used to hand burnish a print by rubbing it over the surface of the paper when it is in contact with the inked-up block. No presses are necessary for this technique, making this a process that can be done at home.

The course explores the history of the traditional Japanese prints as exemplified by Hokusai and Hiroshige and follows the teaching that the tutor Carol Wilhide Justin herself received from Japanese sensei on her residency in Japan.

Throughout the course you will learn how to:

  • Design and plan your wood plate
  • Use a variety of specialist printmaking equipment and materials
  • Use and apply watercolour pigments and nori to create your prints
  • Use a baren
  • Apply your new knowledge of traditional Japanese printmaking techniques to your own work

Suitable for all levels of printmaking experience. Students are required to join from day one, it is not possible to rejoin the course if a session (or part of it) is missed.

The studio is a low-toxic environment with dedicated printmaking facilities for professional hands-on learning. Once you have completed the course we recommend signing up to one of our other Printmaking courses to learn a new technique, or join us for Open Access sessions on Wednesday evening and Saturdays during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills. After completing this course students will be given one free Open Access session.
