COURSE CODE: SC2304PR14

COURSE DATES: Monday 22nd July - Thursday 25th July 2024

TUTOR: Jackie Smith

DAYS: 4

TIMES: 10:00am - 4:30pm

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: All Levels

FEE: £290

LOCATION: Mermaid Court Campus, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR

In this exciting four day course students you will be led by an experienced tutor who will help you develop your ideas into prints by exploring two main relief printing techniques. Relief printing focuses on form and texture; you will learn to combine the tone, hue and saturation of multiple colours to achieve an edition of prints on archival Italian paper.

The first half of the week will be spent carving a linoleum plate using specialist Japanese carving tools to develop a series of reduction relief prints in multiple colour combinations.

The second half of the week will be spent learning Multiplate Woodcut printmaking – the oldest form of printmaking. This is a relief process in which knives and other tools are used to carve a design into the surface of a wooden block.

Throughout this course you will learn how to:

  • Design and draw your design onto a linoleum and wooden block
  • Use a variety of specialist printmaking equipment and materials
  • Plan and stage your colour layers
  • Use a professional printing press

You will gradually add a new colour, building your composition through layers and bringing your prints to life. This popular course is ideal for beginners or repeat attendees.

The studio is a low-toxic environment with dedicated printmaking facilities for professional hands-on learning. Once you have completed the course we recommend signing up to our Relief Print evening courses where you can explore these processes in more detail, or join us for Open Access sessions on Wednesday evening and Saturdays during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills. After completing this course students will be given one free Open Access session.
