An introduction to art making with wood. Starting with the art historical context of sculpting with wood, you will discover how to construct with wood, use found materials, create a wood carving and experiment with surface finishes.

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.Beginner

Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium, but still follow a structured path with guidance from the tutor.Beginner +

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.
These courses tend to be less structured and instead are tailored to the classes’ needs and the direction they want to advance in. Choose an Intermediate course if you are looking to improve your skills and have more critical discussions around the work you produce.Intermediate
YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN MATERIALS
Please bring a sketchbook and drawing/writing materials.
There is a materials cost of £15 which includes some materials for the first few sessions.
Hardwood blocks for carving and materials for own projects will be charged in addition to this fee, as an example, a 10 x 10 x 7cm block of lime will cost £10.
Julian Wild joined the Art Academy in 2016 and has 20 years teaching experience at Morley College and as a visiting lecturer at University level. He has held solo shows at Modern Art Oxford, William Benington Gallery, Maddox Arts, Canary Wharf and Burghley House and taken part in group exhibitions such as Sculpture in The City and in Beyond Limits at Chatsworth House.
His work has been commissioned by Cass Sculpture Foundation, Canary Wharf Group & Oxford University. In 2005 he was a finalist for The Jerwood Sculpture Prize and in 2009-12 was the recipient of The RBKC/Chelsea Arts Club Trust Studio Bursary. He was vice-President of The Royal Society of Sculptors 2015-19.

Students are welcome to use The Hub during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food. You must bring your own keep-cup, water bottle or food container to the Academy as mugs, glasses, and containers will not be available in our Bankside campus.
Tea and coffee will be provided by the Academy and is available from the island unit at the end of The Hub.
